The Netherlands are your 2024 European Champions!
In Sunday’s final, we saw a rematch between title defender The Netherlands and Germany. This highly anticipated game certainly delivered. Germany took an early 0-2 lead, that was later converted to a 2-4 lead. The Dutch fought their way back in the game and went into halftime with 5-4, a lead for the first time in the game. They never let go after, despite the Germans their best efforts. The Netherlands yet again claim the title of European Champions and remain the only team to have this title in IPCH’s history of international competition.
In the battle for bronze, Denmark was determined to end their tournament on a high note in front of their home fans. With a 4 point lead for Denmark at the break, the Italians couldn’t find their way back to claim the medal.
The other finals were, although exciting, much less close. Each victor clearly had the upper hand over their opponent and maintained their lead up until the end. This is the final ranking:
Award Ceremony
At the award ceremony, all players, officials and volunteers were congratulated for their performances and given gifts to remember this great week by. The top three teams received medals for each member of the delegation and a cup with a floorball on.
Multiple important representatives gave a speech about the past tournament: John Petersson, Chairman of Parasport Denmark and IPC Board Member, Craig Carscadden, Chief Development Officer of World Abilitysport and Fabio Rodo, Chairman of IPCH. Fabio had important news to announce about the next big event. the 2026 World Championship host will be Finland! After having to cancel the European Championship in 2020 due to COVID-19, the LOC gets another shot at it. More news about this event will follow later.
Later that evening, teams enjoyed a well-earned meal at the banquet. There, the three best players of the tournament were crowned.
- The best Goalkeeper: No. 22, Simone Ranzato (Italy)
- The best Handstick player: No. 17, Jules van der Heijden (The Netherlands)
- The best T-stick player: No. 6, Maxime Decrock (Belgium)
A look back
The past week, Musholm has been the centre of Europe’s best powerchair hockey. Even H.R.H. Princess Benedikte, patron of Parasport Denmark, witnessed the opening ceremony and the game between Denmark and Belgium on Wednesday. We want to thank everybody involved in the organization of this great tournament, especially the Local Organizing Committee, Parasport Denmark and our Technical Delegates Anna Rossi and Meghan Hines.
After this intense week, everyone will now take some time to recover. And then the next phase starts, the preparation for the World Championship in 2026! See you in Finland!
